ATC is a public charter school in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Education Program and Philosophy
The Academy for Technology and the Classics charter school seeks to provide a classical and technology-based approach to education. It is the intention of ATC that all students will actively participate in its instructional program, which is personalized to a variety of learning styles and individual strengths enabling students to acquire the communication, literacy, thinking and personal skills necessary for a successful future. The school believes that the small school size and small class size give teachers an opportunity to address the individual needs of the students.
The school’s program sets higher academic standards by raising the graduation requirements and seeks to instill the “classic” moral values of respect, integrity, responsibility and honesty.[1]
About ATC
ATC has met No Child Left Behind Requirements for the last three school years.
ATC enjoys a friendly relationship with its authorizing district, Santa Fe Public Schools.
The school’s charter has been renewed and the current charter is in effect through June 2010.
The school takes its fiduciary responsibilities seriously and has worked very diligently to reduce its audit findings from a high of 14 for the 2002-2003 school year to zero findings for the 2005-2006 school year.
The ATC Foundation has received a donation of 10 acres in the Rancho Viejo subdivision upon which to construct a permanent school building.
The ATC Foundation has secured funding via an Industrial Revenue Bond to construct the permanent school building.
The school provides innovative technology classes, i.e., Web Page Design, 3-D Animation,
ATC provides instruction in German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Russian and Latin using computer based instruction along with immersion sessions.
A big problem with the school is that there is not a high amount of girls compared to boys. In many classes there are only about 3 to 4 girls compared to 15 boys.
ATC Accomplishments
The school’s marimba band has become known statewide. The band performs at local venues in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and has been asked to perform at the National Charter School Conference which will be held in Albuquerque in April 2007.
ATC emphasizes foreign language, math, and science by requiring additional credits for graduation in each of these disciplines.
Junior and senior students of ATC may attend dual enrollment classes at Santa Fe Community College
80% of the school’s graduates attend post-secondary schools. Graduates have received admission to Yale University and Princeton University and have been named Regent and President Scholars at the University of New Mexico.
ATC’s population for the 2006-07 school year is 250 students. The current charter allows a maximum potential school population of 400 students. The school currently has waiting lists for all grades with the exception of 11 th and 12 th grades.
Approximately 16% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The ethnic breakdown is 58% Caucasian; 40% Hispanic; 1% Native American;<1% Black; and <1% Asian
