Paris Opera

The Paris Opéra may refer to:

• The theatres -
  • Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique - opened in 1816, destroyed by fire in 1873 (a.k.a. Théâtre de l´Opéra, Théâtre Impérial de l´Opéra, Théâtre de l'Académie Impérial de Musique).
  • Palais Garnier - opened in 1875 as the Académie Nationale de Musique - Théâtre de l'Opéra, renamed Palais Garnier in 1989. Built to the design of Charles Garnier. It is still referred to as the Paris Opéra.
  • Opéra Bastille - opened in 1989, this theatre is the principal venue of the Opera company.

• The companies -
  • Opéra National de Paris - the Opera company, founded by Louis XIV in 1669. Known today as the Opéra Bastille.
  • Paris Opera Ballet - the Ballet company, founded by Louis XIV in 1713 as Le Ballet de l'Opéra (the company's school was founded by Louis XIV in 1661 as the Académie Royale de Danse, known today as the Paris Opera Ballet School).
  • Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique or Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Impérial de Musique - the two "official" names given to the Paris Opera Ballet company during the time in which the Académie Royale de Musique was its principal theatre.
