Ruby Muhammad, born Ruby Macie Grayer (born March 20, 1897)[1] is the Mother of the Nation of Islam.
Biography
Muhammad was born in Sandersville, Georgia, but grew up in Americus, Georgia. She was raised by a woman she used to think was her aunt, but now concurs that this woman was probably not a relative. Muhammad's mother died when she was very young and her father was not known to her until she was a teenager; thus she was raised accordingly.[2]
Muhammad joined the Nation in 1946 and was named Mother of the Nation of Islam in 1986 by Minister Louis Farrakhan. [2]
In March 2008, she allegedly turned 111. Despite her age, she is still in excellent health, still exercising and taking care of herself. [2] From community records in Sandersville, she also believes her father lived to be 107 and her great-grandfather 110.[1] In 2008, Ruby Muhammad, now known as Ruby Pittman (the name of her second husband), got a scooter as a donation from a scooter store.[3][4]
Muhammad is not the widow of Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam. She has had two husbands, neither being Elijah Muhammad.
