The Utub (or Bani Utbah) (العتوب ar) originated from the region of Najd in central Arabia. The tribe is thought to have been formed when a group of different tribal groups migrated from Najd to Kuwait on the Persian Gulf coast sometime in the late seventeenth century.

The current ruling families of Bahrain (the Al Khalifa) and Kuwait (the Al-Sabah) are clans belonging to the Utub. The Al Fazil, Al Jalahma, and Al Bin Ali clans are also members of the tribe, and are largely based in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. The 'Utub are believed to originate from a tribe called Jumaylah, which in turn belongs to the large 'Anizzah confederation.
