The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir, Australia is an award-winning choir based at the University of Newcastle. It was formed in 1995 and consists of students and members of the wider community. The Musical Director is Dr. Philip Matthias.

International Tours

The Choir has toured internationally on four occasions: UK (2000 and 2007), UK and France (2002) and Korea (2004). The Choir has performed in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London on several occasions, also in Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, and Liverpool Catholic and Anglican Cathedrals. In Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris the Choir received a standing ovation by a capacity audience.

The Choir has undertaken twelve live broadcasts for BBC Radio’s Daily Service and recorded two programs for BBC’s Sunday Half-Hour.

In Korea the Choir performed in many universities and churches in Seoul including Yoido Full Gospel Church and at the Heit Bool Arts Centre. Concerts were also undertaken in the south, at Kwang Shin University, Kwang Ju and the surrounding areas. The Choir appeared on Arirang’s “Heart to Heart” television program with a reputed audience of 37 million, and on CTS (Christian Television System), the largest Korean Gospel network.

Competitions

McDonald’s Performing Arts Challenge
In Australia during the last four years the Choir has had major successes at the McDonald’s Performing Arts Challenge, including winning the Open Award for Choirs, the City of Sydney Chamber Choir Award and the Australian Choral Award. The adjudicators’ comments included: “a choir of outstanding quality. You have really achieved a level of performance to place you in the company of international choirs. Bravo!”[1]

ABC Choir of the Year
In 2006 the Choir won the inaugural ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year – Adult Choir. The competition was the first of its kind in Australia and consisted of three rounds of competition over a 5 month period. Both the State and National Finals were broadcast live on ABC Classic FM. [2]

Australian National Eisteddfod
In August 2007 the Choir won all its divisions in the Australian National Eisteddfod held in Canberra. It won the inaugural major choral event of the Eisteddfod – the Australian Open Choir Championship – against a strong field of competitors from around Australia.[3] The three adjudicators praised the Choir’s vibrancy and variety of sound and colour: “Sung with confidence and verve. Your performance kept the audience attention riveted throughout. This was impressive virtuosity, and great entertainment. You left us wanting more, Bravo!”

Battle of the Choirs
In 2008, the University of Newcastle Chamber Choir succeeded in getting a place in the heats of Channel Seven/Granada Production's Battle of the Choirs and has progressed to the Quarter Finals.[4]

Repertoire

Upcoming Activities

In July 2008 the Choir is touring to Victoria and Tasmania, enjoying performances at the national choral Festival of Voices in Hobart[5]. The Choir will also perform this year for Musica Viva.[6]
