It follows the former routing of the Kingston to Quincy section of Route 3 which was moved onto the Southeast Expressway and Pilgrim's Highway expressway when they were fully completed in 1963. The remaining former sections of Route 3 became extensions of Route 3A.[1]
Beginning along the northernmost section of Summer Street in Kingston, Route 53 runs north through the following towns/cities:
- Duxbury (King Town Way, Summer Street)
- Pembroke (Washington Street, Columbia Road)
- Hanover (Columbia Road, Washington Street)
- Norwell (Washington Street)
- Hingham (Whiting Street)
- Weymouth (Washington Street)
- Braintree (Commercial Street, Quincy Avenue)
- Quincy (Quincy Avenue, Southern Artery)
In Pembroke, Route 53 is concurrent with Route 14 for 1.4 miles and, as it crosses the Pembroke–Hanover line, Route 53 is concurrent with Route 139 for 1.1 miles. In Quincy, Route 53 ends as the Southern Artery intersects Washington Street/Route 3A. Traffic continues north toward Boston along Route 3A.
