Charlie Winton is currently CEO and publisher of Counterpoint Press, one of the leading independent publisher's in the United States. In 1976, Winton founded Publisher's Group West (PGW), which served as chairman CEO for 25 years. During his tenure at PGW, the company became the most significant distributor of independent publishing in North America. In 1994, he created a sister corporation Avalon Publishing Group and served concurrently as its CEO as well. In 2002, PGW was sold to Advance Marketing Services. Winton and his partners maintained the ownership of Avalon Publishing Group, which at that time had grown to seven imprints, including Carroll & Graf, Thunder's Mouth Press, Nation Books, Seal Press, Marlowe and Company, Avalon Travel and Shoemaker and Hoard. In 2007, Avalon was sold to Perseus Book Group. Winton's latest venture, Counterpoint LLC was created concurrently with the sale of Avalon by acquiring and merging three distinguished independent publishers: Counterpoint Press, Shoemaker and Hoard and Soft Skull Press. The company currently maintains offices in Berkeley, California and New York City, New York.

In 1997, Publisher's Weekly named Charlie was named one of the eighty most influential people in the last hundred years of American publishing.

Charlie Winton graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Communications in 1972. He lives in Berkeley, California.
