Content
Cruishank has described the channel as "programming for kids by kids". The Fred channel was set up by Cruishank, and his cousins Jon and Katie (the three are collectively known as JKL Productions). The character has been described as a "post-modern Charlie Brown". The Fred videos are usually two or three minutes in length, and feature a short vignette of an incident that has happened in Fred's life (titles include Fred Goes Swimming, Fred Loses His Meds, Fred Gets Detention).

The series is intended as a parody of self-important video bloggers who, in Cruikshank's words, "think that everyone is so interested in them." Cruikshank believes that viewers either "automatically love Fred or automatically hate Fred, there is no in between". Fred his videos to his YouTube channel, even though he is not supposed to be using his mother's video camera, or posting videos, or have even have a YouTube account. The voice of Fred is altered to a higher pitch, "chipmunked" so to speak—producing a similar sound to the chipmunks from the TV show Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The character lives with his recovering alcoholic mother, whose voice is heard but is who is only seen once, in the Halloween episode, for a brief 20-30 seconds (other than that, Fred communicates with all characters off-screen). It is implied that Fred has been mistreated, but he frequently speaks of his love for his mother. Fred's grandmother is mentioned as briefly caring for Fred while his mother was in rehab, on account of alcoholism. When his mother returns, in "Fred's Mom Returns", his grandmother leaves and his mother begins making him do chores such as picking up sticks. It is known that Fred has anger issues. Other frequently mentioned characters include Judy, who Fred has a crush on but whom he is despised by, and Kevin, Judy's boyfriend who bullies Fred. Bertha is apparently a really popular second grader who began socializing with Fred one day when both their moms were at the bar. She tells him to do bad things and made him play a "City of Ember" game in her basement. In one episode however, "Fred: A Star in his own Mind", other characters are seen such as people that work for him and fan girls (although this occurs in a dream sequence). Fred's favorite meal is a TV dinner. However, in one episode Fred's mom takes away his TV dinner privileges. Fred's father was mentioned in the episode "Father's Day", where we find out that Fred's father, who is supposedly a rock star, and is on death row in a mental institution. He also mentions being threatened by the supposed former owner of the Fred channel, who knows where Fred lives. Fred episodes typically begin with "Hey! It's Fred!" and include the catchphrases "Hackin'" (replacement word for freakin') or "Garnet" (a portmanteau of gosh and darn it). They also usually end with "Peace out, home dawg!".

The majority of the videos are edited to feature frequent cuts in the dialogue. There series features little in the way of music, apart from Fred's own singing, and occasionally "Watch How I Do This", a rap song by Kev Blaze featuring Krayzie Bone.

Commercial success
Fred's initial success attracted Sonesta Entertainment, a Californian talent agency, whom Cruishank signed with. The second 'season' of Fred videos also featured some product placement, seen in a dream sequence, in which Fred, who aspires to be famous, is seen on the set of the 2008 film City of Ember. Another video featured clips from the film, with Fred's face superimposed on certain characters.

The Fred channel also features links to the website for Zipit Wireless Messenger, whom Cruishank came into contact with as a result of his agency. Cruishank gained a five-figure sponsorship for promoting this product through his channel, and he has been criticized by the LA Timess Web Scout for using his channel as a vehicle for viral marketing.

Cruishank also sells Fred merchandise through the series' own website.
