The term is usually referred historically to a group of French philosophers who collaborated in the XVIII century in the production of the Encyclopedie.

The Encyclopedie has been considered repository of information and polemical arsenal.

It was an idea of the editors and people that were working on its production that if civilization should be entirely destroyed, mankind might turn to their volumes to learn to reconstruct it.

The head of this new Encyclopedist movement was Denis Diderot.

Same thing is happening with the wikipedia project.

Some wikipedians think that the web site has been sponsored by the United Nations in case of a M.A.D. (Mutual Assured Destruction) war with large use of nuclear weapons.

Nowadays this term is referred to wikipedians managed by LMS.
