The Newcastle Wildcats participate within the British Universities Ice Hockey Association as the single largest represented institution within its competitions (2007/08 season).

History

The club started in the early 1990's with the first team photo in 1994. The club has been growing ever since and was crowned as National Champions in 2001 and 2002 in the inaugural cross university championships. This subsequently developed into the Rawlinson Plate and was taken over by the British Universities Ice Hockey Association.

The club formed a second team within the BUIHA during 2004 followed by a third team entering in the 2006 season formed by the then President Rob Grant (Now Secretary of the BUIHA). Due to the clubs size and experience, it is ideally suited for catering for all sorts of players wishing to participate in university ice hockey.

In addition to competitions with the BUIHA, there is a long standing local rivalry between Northumbria University and Newcastle University which is fought every year in the form of a varsity competition contributing to the overall success of either institution in competing for the Stan Calvert Cup.

Wildcats Alumni

The university is encouraging a range of alumni events. As such the ice hockey club is working towards establishing a number of regular alumni games and activities so that old members can contribute to the club, allowing them to stay involved and keep in touch with members both past and present.
