Dr. Alberto Bustani, Phd is since 2001, President of the Monterrey Region of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico. This region includes the Monterrey Campus, which is the site of the ITESM System, recognized in Latin America for its engineering, medicine and business schools.

The Tecnólogico de Monterrey has 33 campus located all over Mexico, and several sites and offices through Latin America, The United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.

He was previously the dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture also at Tecnológico de Monterrey. He has extensive experience in the energy and environmental fields. He started the Centre for Environmental Quality at Monterrey Tec in 1992 where he stayed as the Director of the Centre until 1998. Before starting this centre he was the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department from 1987 to 1992.

Prior to coming to ITESM Dr. Bustani worked for HYL Steel Company based in Monterrey, where he was until 1983 Development Manager in the area of direct reduction of iron ores.

He earned his PhD (1987) at the University of Sheffield in the area of fuel technology. His bachelor’s degree is from ITESM (1976) in chemical engineering.

Dr. Bustani's research area is related to environmental and energy technology and policy. In these areas he has carried out several studies, has published several papers and has been awarded with one patent.

He participated on the "Watt Committee on Energy", working group on gasification, England, 1984-1986 and co-authored with Dr. A.B.Hedley; "The Fundamentals of Gasification and its Technology", Chapter No. 1: "Gasification: its Role in the Future Technological and Economic Development of the United Kingdom", Watt Committee on Energy Report Number 20, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, London and New York 1989.

Dr. Bustani is co-author of the Mexico’s Status Report on Pollution Prevention for the North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation. He is also author of the paper “Consciousness of Social Responsibility under the NAFTA”; presented at the Aspen Institute in October 1999.

He was awarded with the "Foxwell Memorial Award Prize" of The Institute of Energy, London, England in April 1987. In 1991 he was awarded by ITESM for his academic and research work and in 1992 he was received the Romulo Garza Prize on research and development in Monterrey, Mexico.

The University of Sheffield granted him in October 2005, an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering.
