Jack Chiang, C.M., M.A., LL.D., was born in Canton, China and grew up in Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

He received his B. A. in Foreign Languages and Literature from the National Taiwan University and his M. A. in Journalism from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He began his career as a court reporter for the Packet and Times in Orillia, Ont. He was a member of the newsroom management team of the Kingston Whig-Standard between 1980 and 2007. Earlier in his career, he was sent on assignments in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Romania, England and other parts of Europe and Africa.

He was City Editor from 1994-5 and 1998. From 1995 to May, 2007, he was a columnist.

An aviation enthusiast, he has flown 15 times with some of the world’s top aerobatic-flying teams: Canada’s Snowbirds, Brazilian Air Force’s Smoke Squadron, the French Connection, the Northern Lights and the Ray Ban Gold.

He is the author of Images of Kingston, Celebrating Ontario, Celebrating Atlantic Canada, Jack Chiang’s Kingston and Jack Chiang’s Thousand Islands. He is also the co-author of Truth, Duty, Valour.

Chiang has chaired more than 50 successful fundraising campaigns for the United Way, the Boys and Girls’ Club, the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer Society, Kingston Literacy and other non-profit organizations.
