International Space Science Institute (ISSI)

The International Space Science Institute (abbreviation: ISSI) is an Institute of Advanced Studies where scientists from all over the world meet in a multi- and interdisciplinary setting to reach out for new scientific horizons. Its main task is to further the interdisciplinary study and interpretation of the very complex experimental data from space research missions, already launched or due to be launched by different space agencies. Theorists, modellers, and scientists in related fields and with ground-based data join in the effort. The results of this synergetic activity contribute to the definition of the scientific objectives of future space science projects. The program is focused on the solar system, planetary sciences, astrophysics, astrobiology, cosmology and Earth sciences.

ISSI was set up in Bern, Switzerland, as a non-profit organization and a foundation under Swiss law in 1995. Its basic operations are supported financially by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Swiss Confederation, the University of Bern and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).[1]

Three statutory bodies govern ISSI: the Board of Trustees, the Science Committee and the Directorate. A fourth important body, the Association Pro-ISSI, promotes the idea of ISSI.

Tools:

The main tools in carrying out projects are:

A. Workshops and Working Groups on topics selected by the Directorate (participation is by invitation only)

B. International Teams (selected in competition by the Science Committee on the basis of annual Calls for proposals to the scientific community)

C. Forums where issues of general policy are debated

D. Individual Visiting Scientists

Publications:

All scientific activities result in publications, i.e. in ISSI’s hardcover book series Space Sciences Series of ISSI, published by Springer and also printed in Space Science Reviews, in ISSI’s Scientific Report Series, published by ESA Publications Division, Noordwijk, NL, and as papers in international scientific journals.
