Early History
Born in Edinburgh in 1953 and educated at Trinity Academy before going to read History at the University of Dundee.
Career
Joined the FCO in 1975 straight from university. Studied Arabic at Middle East Centre for Arabic Studies (MECAS)in Lebanon before going on to serve as Commercial Attache in the British Embassy, Abu Dhabi 1978-81. Second Secretary, Tripoli 1981-84 before a spell in London in NENAD and MED. He spent 4 years in Australia as First Secretary British High Commission Canberra. Returning to London in 1992 he was Deputy Head UN Department before becoming an Overseas Inspector. He was appointed Deputy Head of Mission, Riyadh in 1995.
