A Digital Door Lock is an electronic lock for residential applications such as front doors on apartments and single-family houses.

Instead of using a mechanical key you use an electronic key, a code or your fingerprint for authorization. It is more secure because the lock can not be picked, and it is more convenient because the electronic key is more user friendly and faster to use.

The concept of Digital Door Locks emerged in South Korea in the year 2000 when a company called iRevo launched the product GATEMAN II. This was a mortise lock with a motorized bolt and an iButton as primary credential. The lock also had a code keypad as a backup function if the electronic credential would be lost. The concept of having a primary credential (such as an iButton, an RFID card or fingerprint authentication) and a keypad as backup later became a standard for Digital Door Locks.
