Gary Cates is a Republican member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 4th District since 2005. Previously he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 until 2006.

In 2004, Cates successfully ran for a seat in the Ohio Senate to succeed Republican state Sen. Scott Nein, who was prevented from running by Ohio's term limits law. In that election, Cates defeated Melvin Smith.

in 2008, Cates won re-election against Democrat Kathryn Bridgman by a 20% margin.
