Recreation is avocational activity that, typically, refreshes one's body or mind. Recreation is often distinguished from leisure.

Music and dance play an important part of recreation in many cultures. So do sports and hobbies, of course, and sometimes food and drink.

Drugs are sometimes used as a form of recreation (see recreational drug use)--and, like dancing, sex, and some other forms of recreation, regarded in some or all forms, by very many people for various reasons, as illicit activity.

The weekend is typically a time for recreation, perhaps (in Judeo-Christian and Muslim cultures) because the Sabbath falls on the weekend and the Sabbath is "the day of rest." Holidays are also a common time for recreation.
