Superstring theory is an attempt at developing a theory of everything based on vibrating strings in 10 or 26 dimensional space.

Why 10 or 26? Why isn't this a problem?

There are five main varieties of string theory: heterotic, (what others?).

More recently M-theory has been developed, in which the five different incarnations of superstring theory are different ways at looking a single theory, M-theory.
