A state in the United States. South Carolina was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution.
South Carolina is bounded to the north by North Carolina,
to the south and west by Georgia, and to the east by
the Atlantic Ocean.
South Carolina was the first state which tried to withdraw from the United States,
to form the Confederate States of America, precipitating the Civil War. The initial battle of this war happened at Fort Sumter, near Charleston.
