JamLegend is a free, online, browser-based Music video game, similar to Guitar Hero.

History

JamLegend was created by Andrew Lee, Arjun Lall, and Ryan Wilson in 2008.
The company participated in the LaunchBox Digital 2008 summer cycle.
The game was in private-beta from August 26th, 2008 to December 4th, 2008. The players needed invitations in order to have access to the game.
On December 4th, 2008, JamLegend became open-beta so players no longer needed invitations to register.
On Wednesday, March 11th 2009, JamLegend reached 5 million total plays.

Features

Playing "Open Your Eyes" in GuitarJam mode, Legendary Difficulty

JamLegend's main features are :

  • Ability to play on most computers that have internet access. The only requirement is to have the Adobe Flash plug-in installed.
  • 2 Different styles of gameplay : BeatJam and GuitarJam. The only difference is that GuitarJam requires the player to strum the notes.
  • Different types of playing: Solo (against a bot, "Roxanne" or "Chrys"), Duels (player against player) and Showdowns (real-time multiplayer).
  • 4 difficulties for playing the songs : Normal, Skilled, Insane and Legendary,
  • Players' profile page, providing statistics about their scores, rank, level, recent plays, achievements, posts wall, friends...
  • Real-time ladder : presenting the Top 10 players in different categories like global rank, streak, points and wins.
  • Achievements system : The players have 48 possible goals to reach.
  • Expanding amount of songs available to play.

The website allows artists to put their own music on the platform in order to be played.
JamLegend encourages artists to do so : its main argument is that these band can become famous easily : "If you're an artist, you can use our platform to promote your music in a fun and engaging way" (quote from the about page).
