John Holder is a former cricketer for Hampshire CCC (1968-1972) and now first-class and former test umpire. Holder stood as umpire in eleven test matches and nineteen one-day internationals^[1]. As a player Holder was considered to be a brisk right arm medium pace bowler. In the 1970 season Holder took 55 wickets at a modest 23.27 runs^[2]. His finest bowling figures came in 1972 when he took 6 for 49 and 7 for 79 against [[Gloucestershire CCC]. In 1972 Holder also claimed the distinction of taking a hat-trick against Kent CCC^[3].

He co-authored the book [You Are The Umpire] with the illistrator Paul Trevillion^[4]. The book was based on a comic strip that was included in the sports section of the British newspaper The Observer and bares similarities with You Are The Ref as both highlight unusual or difficult decisions that have to be made by sporting officials^[5].
