Yellow Bird is a Swedish film and television production company founded by best selling novelist Henning Mankell and film-producers Ole Søndberg and Lars Björkman. The company was founded to produce films based on Mankells Kurt Wallander novels. The company was sold to Danish media house Zodiac in 2007.[1] Yellow Bird recently co-produced an English language version of the Wallander series with the British broadcaster, the BBC starring Kenneth Branagh.[2] A second series of Wallander will be filmed during the summer of 2009.[3]

Yellow Bird has recently started producing films based on Swedish crime fiction from other writers. Yellow Bird is currently producing six TV films and one feature film based on Stieg Larson's critically acclaimed Millennium trilogy. [4][5] The Milenium films has been sold to several European markets including France and Italy. [6] [7]

Yellow Bird executive producer Sören Staermose confirmed in an interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen that negotioantions are taking place to produce english language Millenium films. This would not ba a US remake of the Swedish films but rather new Hollywood films based on the books. In the interview he states that the possible US films might be pe produced in a similar way as the Wallander tv series starring Kenneth Branagh, shooting in Sweden using english speaking actors. He also states that it is up to the director and says that the story could just as well take place in another country, like Canada.[8]

They have also produced six TV movies about criminal inspector Irene Huss, based on the books by Helene Tursten. [9]

In March 2009 the company acquired the film rights for Norwegian crime writer Anne Holt's books. [10]

In April 2009 the company announced they optioned film rights to Norwegian author Jo Nesbø's most recent novel Headhunters.[11]


In the summer of 2008, Yellow Bird opened an office in Germany.[12] Their first project will be a film based on Henning Mankell's novel The Chinaman [13]
