newmatilda.com is an independent Australian site with news, analysis and satire. It offers a vibrant mix of views and voices and actively seeks out new and in-depth perspectives to broaden and influence the political debate.

Since its launch in August 2004, newmatilda.com has become a significant part of the Australian media landscape. newmatilda.com often attracts comment and criticism from other media sources.

The site was established by John Menadue. In May 2007, the policy section of newmatilda.com separated to become the Centre for Policy Development.

In October 2007, newmatilda.com discontinued the subscription-based model of accessing the sites content. All content on the site can be accessed at no cost but visitors are encouraged to register and receive updates as well as use the interactive aspects of the site.

In January 2008, newmatilda.com re-launched on a new platform with re-designed layout and functionality.

In July 2008, the inaugural newmatilda.com prize for political cartooning was launched. This online event ran for three months. The competition winner was Sarah Parsons, who received first prize of $6,000. The next newmatilda.com prize for political cartooning is scheduled to open on 1 April, 2009.

The website also publishes articles from a varying list of international and Australian writers. They include; Robert Fisk, John Pilger, John Martinkus, Irfan Yusuf, Antony Loewenstein, and Bruce Haigh. newmatilda.com features the satirist cartoons of illustrators such as Bill Leak.

The website's contributors have attacked Israel's 2009 defensive operations in Gaza^[1]^[2]

The website, while generally independent in its criticisms of major Australian political parties, has a distinct left stance^[3]
