Rock Springs (Navajo: Chéchʼízhí) is a census-designated place located in McKinley County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 558.

Geography

Rock Springs is located at 35°36'34" North, 108°49'35" West (35.609485, -108.826376)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²). 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 558 people, 132 households, and 114 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 35.7/km² (92.4/mi²). There are 189 housing units at an average density of 12.1/km² (31.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 0.18% White, 0.00% African American, 99.64% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 132 households out of which 68.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 28.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.6% are non-families. 11.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.23 and the average family size is 4.51.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 47.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 11.1% from 45 to 64, and 2.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $26,429, and the median income for a family is $24,271. Males have a median income of $24,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $6,499. 44.3% of the population and 39.0% of families are below the poverty line.
