Her fine singing voice saw her help propel band Rouge (Amrita and band members Laura Ismail and Legha Yousuf) to fame in 2005 with the release of the single 'Dont be shy' and the self titled debut album[http://www.bbc.co.uk/birmingham/content/articles/2005/02/11/miss_india_qa.shtml]. The release of the album is particularly impressive given that all members were University students at the time meaning little opportunity to tour in support. Despite dissapointing sales of the album, the band and 'Dont be shy' in particular remain popular in the British Asian community.

Amrita Hunjan is a British Asian model and singer. She is perhaps most famous for being a singer in the RnB/pop band Rouge.

Amrita is also known in the British Asian community for being the winner of Miss India UK 2004 and Miss India Worldwide 2005.

Amrita was born in Leeds and claims to be 'Yorkshire born and bred' [1]. Excellent A level results got her a place at Birmingham University to study dentistry. Despite the intensive studying schedule that the second year of her course brought with it, she excelled at the Miss India UK 2004 competition. Amrita impressed judges with her beauty and charisma and above all in the question and answer session. A fine rendition of 'Show me Heaven' by Maria McKee saw her singing voice being compared to the likes Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston [2]. She followed this win with an even more impressive victory at the 'Worldwide' competition held in New Delhi in January 2005. Like Miss India UK, this competition is notable for its emphasis on talent, cultural values and intelligence in addition to looks. Once more Amritas intelligence and presence saw her triumph, this time against international competition [3].

Her voice and music talent got her noticed and with friend Laura Ismail and fellow bandmember Legha Yousuf the band Rouge was formed. The release of the single 'Dont be shy' propelled them to fame in 2005 and the self titled debut album followed [4]. Amrita has performed internationally in places including New York, Dubai and Holland- a feat particularly impressive given that she and her band members were University students meaning little opportunity to tour in support. [5]

Amrita seems intent on focussing on her music career upon completing her intensive University studies, with the next Rouge album set to be produced by Timbaland in Miami [6]. Amrita is currently writing and recording with Rouge and they are said to be 'in no rush to release it until they get it right' [7]. A behind the scenes video of the group including new member Nicola (who replaced Legha) could be found on the Desi Hits website in June 2009 [8].
