Life

Bhandaru Acchamamba was born in 1874 in a small village called Penu gangiprolu in [Krishna district.]. Her father died at the age of six. She was married at the age of ten and was widowed early in life. She had no formal education but with her younger brother, [Komarraju Lakshmana Rao]’s encouragement, she learned to read Telugu, Hindi and English.

Acchamamba died on January 18, 1905.

Work

Acchamamba has written short stories (dhana trayodasi, stri vidya), essays on women’s issues and a volume of biographies of 34 women (Abala saccharitra ratnamala). She traveled extensively and spoke with several scholars. [[1]]
