Vander Plaats has attacked him for his role, as Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, for the Federal budget deficit, and the related but more arcane issue of unfunded mandates. Unhappiness over Iraq war and the President's unpopularity may also hurt Nussle. Nussle is also saddled with a history of an adultery-driven divorce, that could be flung into his face later in the campaign, depending on how dirty it gets; this last issue could backfire on Vander Plaats, or let him squeek through to a victory.

Bob Vander Plaats is a candidate for the 2006 Iowa Republican nomination for Governor. He is from Sioux City. He and his wife Darla have four sons.

His main opponent is Congressman Jim Nussle.

He is a conservative's conservative, being for or against all of the usual topics one associates with this. He has a squeeky clean personal reputation. It's the sort of thing the Iowa Republican base likes.
