Revision as of 11:23, 25 April 2010
The U Thant Peace Award was created by Sri Chinmoy, after U Thant's death. First offered in 1982, the award is given to individuals and organizations who have exemplified the lofty spiritual ideals of the late United Nations Secretary-General U Thant and implemented those ideals in the tireless pursuit of world peace.
Sri Chinmoy and U Thant met on a number of occasions and expressed a mutual respect[1]
It must noted that some Chinmoy ex-disciples argue that this award gave Chinmoy, a cult leader, the opportunity to meet important people whenever he wanted and have a very good photo added to his collection of big shots
Recipients
It had been bestowed by Sri Chinmoy upon Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Kurt Waldheim the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Dada J.P. Vaswani , Swami Satchidananda and U Thant’s daughter, Daw Aye Aye Thant.[2]
