KrezFutsal is a football team based in a school at Tanglin Road, Singapore that plays in the Ministry of Education 7-aside Soccer Tournament[1] annually at the Ministry of Education Sports & Recreation Club (MESRC). The Team was founded by Mr. Irwan Johari, Mr. Kenneth Quek and Mr. Mohammad Harman on 15th May 2008.
The team is unique in its results because of a series of draws it obtained in any football tournaments and matches held in Singapore which makes them undefeated most of the time. The team changed its name from Crescent Futsal to KrezFutsal United in December 2008 due to much controversy from similar names used by other parties.
The team's traditional home kit colour is black and blue, although it initially adopted a blue oblique stripe on the shirt. It has no crest but has a brand to signify the type of jersey. Between 2008 - 2009, the team adopted Adidas for their jersey branding. In 2010, the team adopted Nike for their jersey branding.
The Ministry of Education 7-aside Soccer Tournament is held annually at the Ministry of Education Sports and Recreation Club (MESRC)[2] which is located at 21 Evans Road, Singapore. The Ministry of Education Sports and Recreation Club (MESRC) was formed in year 2000 and registered as a society. The main objective of the club is to promote sports, social and recreational activities amongst members. MESRC currently has two clubhouses, namely Clubhouse @ Buona Vista and Clubhouse @ Evans, which operates a full range of sports and recreation facilities to cater to the needs of all its members.[3]
Objectives
The objectives of the team are very simple:
1. To play competitive soccer matches in Singapore.
2. To build a team eventually to play against other schools in Singapore.
3. To satisfy our passion for soccer and lastly to have fun together.
4. To participate in the annual Ministry of Education Soccer Tournament.
History
Early Years (2007 - 2008)
KrezFutsal was formed on 16 May 2008. During the first few months of its formation, the team played street soccer at indoor sports stadium as part of their training and converted to field football after the team grew in numbers from 3 to 11. Initially, there were disagreements to its formation from the public due to its name of the team which was previously called Crescent Futsal.
The team was on the verge to disband but they refused and carried on with trainings after much consideration from the founders. The team eventually changed its name from Crescent Futsal to KrezFutsal United. With their unconditional passion in football, they continued to participate in competitions in Singapore with a new name.
In June 2008, the team adopted the Adidas jersey blue shirt with white strips on the chest. This was the first jersey that the team used for their formation attire. KrezFutsal participated their first football tournament at the Ministry of Education Soccer Tournament at MESRC on 22nd August 2008. Leo Lee had a hamstring on the right leg and was substituted out during the first match against J Star Utd. Eventually, the team failed to go through the next round without its striker after drawing against both J Star Utd and Northern Lights Utd with a similar score of 0-0.
Building Years (2008 - 2009)
By March 2009, Ravinder Mohan, Marcus Poon and Shervon Yak left the team. Roger Vu, Hanz Lai and Brianna Poh joined KrezFutsal on the following month. Roger Vu was a left-footed and was assigned as a mid-fielder. Hanz Lai plays as a striker and his scoring capability had added to the attacking power of the team as a center-forward. Brianna Poh just joined the team as a reserve player in defense. In June 2009, the team adopted a similar Adidas jersey black shirt with one white strip across the chest. This was one of the best-looking jersey that the team used for their formation attire. KrezFutsal participated their second football tournament at the Ministry of Education Soccer Tournament at MESRC on 25th September 2009. The tournament lasted 2 days and ended on 26th September 2009.
KrezFutsal once again drew with FC JBros Utd with a score of 0-0 and lost to First Toa Payoh Secondary School with a score of 0-1 by conceding a penalty. The mid-field partnership between Kenneth and Harman was a strong hurdle for the opponents to break through into their defense. Unfortunately for the striker, Leo Lee who recovered from hamstring during the last tournament made a significant sliding foul on the opponent from the back in the penalty box during the tournament and conceded a penalty during the match against First Toa Payoh Secondary School. Nevertheless, KrezFutsal was driven out of the tournament after losing that crucial match.
KrezFutsal's style of playing was focused mainly on the central defense. They felt that switching to an attacking formation might trigger more winning opportunities for the team in the future. In December 2009, Goalkeeper Hafriz decided to retire from football. As a result, KrezFutsal was left without a goalkeeper until the following year. The morale of the team was at its lowest when they heard the news.
Success Years (2009 - 2010)
In early 2010, Barry Woolhead from England, John Chong and Chris Kuang joined the team as defenders. During this time, Myo Zaw Nyunt had knee injuries during training and had decided to pull out from the team. He did not leave immediately but has decided to volunteer as an advisor for KrezFutsal.
Central Defender, Irwan Johari decided to take up the role of a goalkeeper for the team. He was successfully appointed by the team as the goalkeeper in June 2010. Soon after, Kenneth Quek took up the captaincy unconditionally. As a founder and player, he restructured the team's formation and adopt several attacking strategies for the team during training.
Barry, John and Chris were significantly assigned to their respective positions and has brought tremendous credibility to themselves. With their presence in the team, the morale of the team increased tremendously and they felt secured with them around as experienced central defenders. KrezFutsal adopt a new team jersey to an "Inter Milan" type of jersey in which the branding comes from Nike. A new look and feel that would probably change the team's image and increasing its determination to win.
KrezFutsal participated their third football tournament at the Ministry of Education Soccer Tournament at MESRC on 17th September 2010. The tournament lasted 2 days and ended on 18th September 2010.
KrezFutsal was placed in Group A table in the tournament consisting of Saint Andrews Junior College (SAJC), Bukit View Secondary School (BVSS) and Zhonghua Primary School. All together they had to play three matches against one another.
KrezFutsal adopted an attacking diamond formation and fielded Hanz Lai and Ash Lee as strikers, Kenneth and Harman as the mid-fielders, Barry Woolhead and John Chong as the defenders. Leo Lee was assigned to standby as a reserve player together with the rest throughout the tournament.
The first match against SAJC ended up with a draw of 0-0 with no goals from both sides. The clash against SAJC proved fatal for Goalkeeper Irwan Johari. Fortunately, he recovered soon after that match. The second match against Bukit View Secondary School ended up in a draw of 1-1 as well. Eventually Harman managed to score an early goal just outside the penalty box but was equalized later on at the end of stoppage time. KrezFutsal managed to climb to the top of Group A after beating Zhonghua Primary School with a score of 1-0 at the third match with a goal scored by Barry Woolhead from the near post after a shot on goal taken by Kenneth which was bounced off from the crossbar.
For the first time, KrezFutsal made it through to the second round and faced the Gabellions from Saint Gabriel Secondary School. It was shortlived for KrezFutsal when they scored an early goal to go through to the quarter-finals which was just a few minutes away. The opponents scored at stoppage time and the game drew 1-1 at full time. KrezFutsal eventually lost to Gabellions from a penalty shootout after Kenneth and Harman missed the penalty consecutively. With much expectations unfulfilled, one of their striker, Roger Vu quitted KrezFutsal in the following month. Nevertheless, the team felt that it was the most fulfilling year for them with great improvement.
Looking into the future (2010 - Present)
KrezFutsal had decided to take a break from field football tournaments for the year. They are venturing into small scale matches in futsal courts against various teams in Singapore. The futsal court that the team had been regularly playing at is the East Coast's Futsal Court. [4]
