Prince Mariano Hugo of Windisch-Graetz (27 July 1955- ) is the head of the Austrian Windisch-Graetz family and the ambassador of Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Slovenia.

Upbringing and family

Mariano Hugo of Windisch-Graetz was born in Trieste. His parents were Prince Maximilian, son of Prince Hugo Vincenz and Princess Leontine zu Fürstenberg, and Princess Maria Luisa Serra di Gerace, daughter of Prince Giovan Battista Serra di Gerace and Princess Maria Grazia Carafa d'Andria.

He attended the school in Rome of the Fratelli Cristiani del S.Giuseppe Istituto de Merode and the St. Cloud school in the United Kingdom and qualified in 1975 as an economist and political science at the University of Buckingham in the same country. In 1976, when his father died, at the age of 21, he became head of the Windisch-Graetz Family.

On 11 February 1990 he married Archduchess Sophie of Austria (b. Boulogne-sur-Seine 19 January 1959), the daughter of Archduke Ferdinand and Archduchess Helen, at Salzburg, Austria. The marriage resulted in three children: Prince Maximilian Hugo born at Salzburg on 4 August 1990, Prince Alexis Ferdinand born at Rome on 7 December 1991 (died in S.Angelo in a car accident on 9 February 2010), and Princess Larissa Maria Grazia Helen Leontina Maria Luisa born at Rome on 11 December 1996.

Appointments and activities

In 1984 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as a Gentleman of His Holiness. As a gentleman of the Holy Father he receives officially the Head of States, Prime Ministers, visiting the Holy Father and Ambassadors Accredited to the Holy See, participates at the official Audiences of the Holy Father. He is also a Knight of Honour and Devotion in Obedience of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and Grand Officier pro Merito Melitensi, Knight Grand Officer of the Order of Santo Sepolcro, Knight of Justice of the Sacro Ordine Costantiniano di S.Giorgio, Knight of the Collar of the Supreme Order of the SS. Annunziata and Knight of Grand Cross of the Order of Santi Maurizio and Lazzaro.

In 1997 he founded the Windisch-Graetz Foundation for humanitarian interventions towards the poor, the sick people and the Catholic Church, including landmine injuries to children resulting from the Serbian-Kosovo war.

On the 30th of November 2000, Archduke Otto of Austria appointed him as Knight of the Golden Fleece.

In 2003 he was nominated by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary towards the Republic of Slovakia, renewed in 2006.

In February 2009 His Most Reverend Eminence Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, President of the Pontifical Counsel of Justice and Pace, nominated him as a Board Member of the Foundation of Holy Matthew.
