Bambú is a name brand of rolling paper.

Brand history

Although the current brand owner claims that the brand was established in 1764,[1][2], Bambu as a brand name was created in 1907 by Rafael Abad Santonja who was born in 1851 and died in 1911.[3][4][5][6]. The earliest trademark registration was in 1908, and there was no bamboo wood for paper production in Spain in 1764[7], making the product more likely to be produced in 1907/1908 as per the trademark filings[8]. It is one of the older trademarks in the cigarette paper industry.

In the United States

Bambu was first imported to the United States in 1921,[9]. The brand rights were purchased in 1984 by a Long Island New York company operated by Nancy Spielvogel.[10] Bambu markets both paper and clothing with a line encompassing paper sizes Double Wide, Half Extra, Big, and Regular. The company also offers a line of "Pure Hemp" papers which it claims are made from hemp pulp.

Corporate history

The brand was originally produced by Rafael Abad Santonja in Alcoy, Spain [11]. This factory produced many brands no longer in existence. The brand name Bambú was sold in 1984 to a Long Island New York company Bambu Sales Inc. and the new owner stopped production in Alcoy and now is private label produced exclusively by Miguel y Costas in Spain and Argentina.[12][13][14] To this day in Alcoy where Bambú was once produced, you also can still visit the Bambú Restaurant on the street "Carrer del Bambú.[15]Bambu flavored papers are flavored with saccharin and other artificial flavors [16][17][18]

Pop culture

Bambu became a pop culture reference during the 1970s with the release of the Cheech and Chong Big Bambu album. Since then, Bambu has had many other musical references in pop culture with by artists such as The Notorious B.I.G.,[19] Method Man,[20] A Tribe Called Quest,[21] and others. Most recently Bambu appeared on the front cover of a book Pot Culture. In the world of art, the Bambu name was used to title the Big Bambú roof installation by Doug and Mike Starn at New York City's Metropolitan Museum.[22]
