Played only rugby union at school, representing Coventry, Warwickshire and the Midlinds at schoolboy level, he was also an England schoolboy rugby trialist. Signed by [[Coventry City Football Club]] from local club Municipal Sports in 1953, but didn't make his Coventry city first team debut until the 1956 season. Filled either full back position, made 132 appearances in all competitions scoring 3 goals. Left the Sky blues in 1964 to sign for Walsall football club where his football career ended due to a second broken leg a year later.
