Black Death are an American band who have been noted as the "first all-African-American heavy metal band."[1] The group were also mentioned in Ian Christe's book Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal.[2], and mentioned Rock 'n' roll and the Cleveland connection by Deanna R. Adams as "one of the only, if not the only, all-black metal bands in the country" in 1987[3][4].
The group formed in 1979 in Ohio and had a fan following in their local area. After one lineup changes and demos[5] the group eventually released their self-titled debut in 1984.[1]
In 2007 Phil Bullard and Mike Green recruted Siki and formed a new group called "Mandrake" [6].
In 2008, original drummer Phil Bullard died.[7][8]
In early 2009 Founding member and Black Death copyright holder Greg Hicks reformed Black Death with a new line up. Greg Hicks is the only remaining founding member that owns the copyright to the name, logo, songs and lyrics. The band consists of founding member Hicks and is supported by a line up of vetrans of the local music scene. Black Death's new line up performed as special guests on February 20, 2009 at the 88.7FM WJCU Radio Benefit Concert. The following April Black Death performed at the Dittigheim Indoor Open Air Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2010 the new line up of Black Death played their 25 year anniversary show in downtown Cleveland to a standing room only crowd. Black Death contiued their reign on local venues and on December 11, 2010 delivered a hard drving, crowd pleasing set that brought the roof down at The 2010 Iron Ingo Cleveland Indoor Air Festival to another standing room only crowd. Black Death is anxiously awaiting the release of a 2cd re-issue of their material with a date yet to be determined by Auburn Records. Black Death recently launched the band's new web site: http://www.blackdeathband.com while working on new material and preparing for their next assault on the ears of their fans.
