Spinnwebe is perhaps best known for the Family Circus parody Dysfunctional Family Circus (DFC), which ran from 1994 to 1999. This controversial and popular feature invited visitors to envision and submit alternate captions for Family Circus cartoons. The submissions were culled by Galcik and others, and the best ones posted. Common submissions put obscene, incestuous, criminal, and other shocking and hilarious comments into the mouths of the adorable tykes and upright adults of Family Circus. |

SpinnWebe is the personal web site of Greg Galcik, aka "spinn", most notable as the home of Dysfunctional Family Circus, which ran in the late 1990's. SpinnWebe is the German word for "spider web".
Origin
In March 1993, Galcik started an FTP site on a machine called "spider", named after the song Spider by They Might Be Giants, to serve files for various personal projects, such as audio samples from TMBG songs. This grew over the following year, and as Web technology began to emerge, he began to phase out the FTP site in June 1994 and created "The Spider WWW Site".
Galcik later shortened the name to "SpiderWeb", but after receiving a letter from a company called Spiderweb Communications warning they carried a trademark on the name "Spiderweb", he changed the name of the site to "SpinnWebe" in April 1995. It is from this word which Galcik also derived his Internet alias, "spinn".
Features
Dysfunctional Family Circus
SpinnWebe is perhaps best known for the Family Circus parody Dysfunctional Family Circus (DFC), which ran from 1994 to 1999. While the Dysfunctional Family Circus concept was not original to SpinnWebe, this version invited all visitors to submit alternate captions for Family Circus cartoons, which would be published on the site if Galcik and a small group of editors found them funny enough. The editing process went against the popular "free-for-all" trend of the time, but it kept a certain level of comedic quality to the publicized submissions, which may have been a contributing factor to its popularity. Captions frequently cast the wholesome Family Circus in an unwholesome light, playing off obscenities, incest, criminal activity, and other negative qualities, to contrast with the comic's original reality. However, the captions also frequently rose to a level of wit and humor not often seen in typical, one-off Family Circus parodies.
In 1999, King Features Syndicate sent a letter to Galcik demanding its discontinuation. Although the legality of the parody is not immediately apparent and valid points exist on both sides, Galcik elected to honor the request out of courtesy toward Bil Keane, the creator of Family Circus.
Prior to the demise of DFC, the feature It's A Dysfunctional Life (IADL) was added. IADL is similar to Dysfunctional Family Circus in its operation, except that instead of using Family Circus cartoons, readers were invited to submit captions for photographs taken by Galcik and submitted by other users.
IADL was renamed to A-1 AAA AmeriCaptions in 2003 and now allows for used submitted pictures (as opposed to strictly useing photos taken by Galcik).
A-1 AAA AmeriCaptions has a small group of editors that sort captions but it is up to Galcik's discretion as to what ultimately gets into the archive.
Other features
Other features on SpinnWebe include 1-900-ZWEBLÖ-7, the Nipple Server, Brainshots, Scribs, Apostrophe's, Ex Libro, Stories, and more. Stories include MovieMask, The Schumin Web, and Jeff Rambo's iSourceline, along with other topics of interest. There is also a feature that allows the sending of online greeting cards to friends and loved ones.
The Spinwebe Universe
Besides Galcik, a number of artists, writers, administrators, and hangers-on contribute to SpinnWebe in various ways; and there are three related web sites, amusing.org, Scribs, and Spinnoff. This constitutes the SpinnWebe Universe.
- amusing.org is a fusion site, combining short one-sentence entries in the mode of neo-dada, cryptosurrealism, American slapstick comedy, and other elements less easy to describe.
- Scribs is a webcomic.
- Spinnoff is a mostly a meeting, discussion, and administrative center for members and guests of the SpinnWebe Universe.
