Songs for the Devil and Death is a poetry collection by Scottish author Hal Duncan.

It is Duncan's first poetry collection to receive wide release as his two previous collections, Sonnets for Orpheus and The Lucifer Cantos had only been printed as very limited, handbound editions - respectively, 26 and 24 copies.[1][2]

It was first published, directly on paperback, e-book and Kindle in the United Kingdom by Papaveria Press, an imprint of Circle Six, in July 2011.[3]

It is sold through most of the "regular" book retailers, both in shops and on line,[4][5][6] and can be bought through the Circle Six website.[7]

Themes

Hal Duncan once said that he doesn't choose the themes he writes on - rather, they "cross each other’s paths".[8] Death and sexuality (he is homosexual[9]) are central in his works.

He admits that when writing poetry he "unleashes" his inner self much more than he does when he writes prose.[8]

It has been called a "primal collection of verse" focused on highlighting humanity in an inhuman world. It deals with grief, rage, pain and ecstasy.[10]
