Overview:

Parklands College & Christopher Robin Pre-Primary is a private school situated in Parklands, Cape Town, South Africa. The College is managed by a Board of Directors represented by the Managing Director. An Audit, Remuneration and Scholarship Committee, together with various management committees, top and middle, operate in conjunction with the Board to manage and administer the academics and daily operations of the College. The Board of Directors subscribes to the values of good corporate governance, espoused in the King II report. In so doing, the Directors recognise the need to conduct the College with integrity and in accordance with generally acceptable corporate practices.

History:

In 1980, Lorraine Roth, opened the doors of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School to the residents of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. Her vast experience in the field of education brought about a well-patronised and respected establishment.

The growth of her vision, encouraged by the staunch support of parents prompted the search for land to grow the school from Pre-Primary to matriculation. The Western Seaboard was identified as a potential major growth area through a thorough research process that included consultation with the Department of Education. This was further supported by statistics provided by the Town Planning Department. These factors indicated that Independent Education would complement the development of the new city and suburb of Parklands.

The construction of Parklands College commenced in 1998, in the new suburb of Parklands. The College proudly opened the doors of its new Campus in July of 1998. The College draws learners from Parklands, Table View, Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Durbanville, Plattekloof, Sunset Links, Atlantic Beach and Darling.

The suburb of Parklands has expanded at the rate of approximately 1000 households a year for the past 4 to 5 years. Parklands is one of the major growth areas in the Blaauwberg City Administration and is expected to grow to a population of 540 000 by 2015, which will ultimately rival the size of East London.

A new campus is now also being added in Sandown to house even more growth to be opened as an exclusive Secondary Faculty in 2012.

In 2005 Parklands College submitted the first documentation as part of the accreditation processes. We were found to be fully compliant on all 19 criteria set by Umalusi and received provincial accreditation status. Based on the subsequent required annual progress and monitoring reports we were granted accreditation candidate status.

School Buildings:

The school is currently located in 3 buildings. The Pre-Primary and Primary School from Grade 1 to Grade 3 is located at 91 Raats Drive, Parklands. This building boasts tennis courts, netball courts, a swimming pool, dance studios and large sports fields. The Pre-Primary building that houses the Grades 4-6 is situated at 50 Wood Drive, Parklands. This is directly opposite the Raats Drive Campus and access between the two is granted over a main road with a specially situated pedestrian crossing with traffic light. The Wood Drive Faculty has cricket pitches and cricket practice nets and a large sports field for playing rugby or softball. The Secondary Faculty can be found on 1 College Avenue, Sandown. Being more advanced, this faculty hosts a music wing that gives way to specialised training for a large arrangement of musical instruments as well as choir and orchestra. There is also a in-house culinary school for learners who have chosen to do Hospitality Studies as part of their curriculum. Also on campus is a lap pool, water polo pool, cricket pitch and sports fields.

Sporting Activities:

Parklands College offers an array of sports giving learners opportunity to be trained by professionals. The sporting teams who wish to are entered into leagues to learn to compete at a higher level. Preparatory learners participate annually in the Storzners Gala at Milnerton Primary School as well as the Bridgehouse Gala hosted by Bridgehouse Independednt School in Franschoek. We have our Annual Derby Day with Elkanah House where an array or sporting activities are entered into. The college sends learners on tours both nationally and internationally. In July 2011 the U13 Cricket team went on tour to The United Kingdom where they played various different schools and clubs.

Cultural Activities:

Musicality is nurtured and promoted within the College from a very early age. Learners are screened on a regular basis to establish musicality and special talents. Private tuition as well as group work is offered in Violin, Drums, Clarinet, Electronic Keyboard, Piano, Guitar, Marimba Band, Saxophone, Flute, Recorder and Voice. Dance is extremely popular and learners are able to join Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop, Tap and Jazz. Wherever possible, learners are encouraged to participate in an international examination.

The College has an Orchestra, a Junior and Senior Choir. Talented College learners are members of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and regularly participate in public performances. Learners are encouraged to participate in Eisteddfods and festivals, providing our artists with opportunities to perform in public.

The Visual Arts are incorporated throughout our curriculum and are seen as a vital form of free expression. Our art rooms are fully equipped with the latest technology and an innovative approach to teaching this subject is applied. Art tours and outings are regularly arranged in order to bring learners into contact with the work of professional artists.

School Crest and Motto:

Our Family Crest dates back to 1188. The Noble and Ancient surname Roth has two origins. One from the German word “Tot” meaning the red-haired one. One which could mean that the first Roth had red hair, or more likely, came from the name of the place where the bearer once lived. According to scholars, the Jewish name Roth is chosen because it was the colour of the flag of the tribe of Reuben. The earliest instances of the surname occur in the “Wurttenbergysches Urkundenbuch” a document which first registered the name Roth in 1188. George Michael Roth, was a member of the Roth family of Coblenz and was knighted in 1770.

Blazen of Arms Azure, a unicorn ramant argent. Translation: The heraldic colour azure (blue), means truth and loyalty. Argent (white), signifies peace and sincerity. According to legend the unicorn, by dipping it’s horn into liquid, is said to be able to detect poison.

Crest The unicorn, issuant, means only the upper part of the unicorn is visible.

The school motto “Virtus Per Scientiam” which means “Strength Through Knowledge”

Scholarships:

Parklands College and its Board of Directors have made a moral decision to uplift members of the community and in particular learners from previously disadvantaged communities, and in this endeavour, make Scholarships available to interested learners giving them an opportunity to share in the top class facilities that are on offer.

New learners applying to enter the Secondary Faculty are required to write an entrance assessment, which will assess the learner’s ability in English and Mathematics. Scholarships may be awarded to students on merit.
