Untitled

Barton Hollow is the first full-length studio album from independent group The Civil Wars. Helmed by Grammy Award-winning producer Charlie Peacock, it was released on February 1, 2011, and became the #1 downloaded album on iTunes that same week.[1] It also charted at #1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart, #12 on the US Billboard 200, #2 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart, and #3 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart.[2] The album was preceded by the lead single title track, which was performed live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on January 14.[3] As of the chart dated June 4, 2011, the album has sold 94,781 copies in the US.[4]

Online Promotion

The early success of "Barton Hollow" relied heavily on word-of-mouth and online promotion. Tweets by Taylor Swift and Sara Bareilles helped the album gain broad exposure, even without a traditional marketing budget.[5] When "Poison & Wine" was placed in an episode of Grey's Anatomy, the duo found out the morning of the episode's airing. They scrambled to film a music video that afternoon, and uploaded it that same day. The video received almost 500,000 hits before the album was released.[6]
