Oksana Serhiyivna Makar died on 29 March 2012, three weeks after she was allegedly raped, strangled and set on fire by three men in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on 8 March 2012.[1] Her case became a cause célèbre in Ukraine when only one of the attackers was charged by the police. The other two, whose parents were former government officials, were released on bail.[2] They were later rearrested after a public outcry and mass protests on 13 March.[2]

Attack

Makar, aged 18[3], was attacked in Mykolaiv in the south of Ukraine on the night of 8–9 March 2012.[1] Three men allegedly raped Makar at an apartment owned by one of them and attempted to strangle her. They then set fire to her at a building site.[4] The next day Makar was discovered by a passer-by and taken to hospital. She suffered burns on 55 percent of her body and received lung damage due to smoke inhalation.[1] Her right arm had to be amputated to stop gangrene from spreading.[5]

Investigation

Three men – Maxim Prisyazhnyuk, 24, Yevgeny Krasnoshchok, 23, and Artem Pogasyan, 22[5] – were arrested on 11 March,[6] but two of them were released by the police on bail.[1][2] It was later revealed that their parents were ex-government officials from the Mykolaiv area and were connected to local politicians.[1] Prisyazhnyuk is the adopted son of a former chairwoman in a regional legislature.[4]

National outcry

Protest in support of Makar on 15 March 2012 in Mykolaiv

The Kyiv Post called the attack "one of Ukraine's most heinous crimes in recent years".[1] The actions of the police were also deeply criticised by the media and there were public protests in Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and Odessa.[1] The death of Makar has been linked with so-called "bigwig crimes": crimes committed by either the children of public officials or by officials themselves.[1][5][7][3][8]

On 29 March, Makar died from her injuries. The same day, an interior ministry spokesman announced that all three men had been charged with her rape and murder and faced life in jail.[1]

Makar was buried on 30 March in Luch. Since she died unmarried, she was buried in a wedding dress, in accordance with local tradition.[5]
