History

The Harlan Literary Society was founded in 1889 at the Central Collegiate Institute (CCI) by Professor George C. Millar and George H. Burr.[1] The establishment of the society initiated a rivalry with the Franklin Literary Society.[1] Both societies engaged in literary or oratory competitions at CCI. The Institute was renamed Hendrix College on June 10, 1889 and was relocated the next year to Conway Arkansas.[2] The Society survived the move and was given a large hall in the new Main facility.[1] The Harlan and Franklin societies were the preeminent club at Hendrix College. In the 1920's all male students were either "a Harlan or Franklin."[2] The two societies debated weekly on various topics, such as
