Charles James de Lacy (1856–1929) was one of the foremost British marine artists of his period. He was especially known for his warship imagery and was regularly commissioned by Elswick shipbuilder W. G. Armstrong Whitworth.

Outline Bibliography

Although de Lacy was born in Sunderland, County Durham, in the North East of England, and would do much work in that area, his family had actually relocated with him to Lambeth in London by 1870.[1] While in Lambeth he married Alice Harriet Hill in 1880[2]. In the matter of his death 1936 is often cited;[3] however, the evidence suggests 1929 is correct[4].

He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889,[5] having undertaken training at The National Gallery.[6] Magazines such as The Illustrated London News were among early patrons.[7]

He died in Epsom Surrey. Sources vary regarding the correct spelling of the surname: de Lacy or de Lacey. The first three entries in further reading all say de Lacy (including the BBC). The Royal Museums at Greenwich (including the National Maritime Museum use de Lacey.

Individual Notable Works

A summary of his notable works is given in Look and Learn History Picture Library entry.

Another source showing work and indicating the esteem in which he is held comes from the BBC.

Taking those two sources a small selection of titles would include The Battle Against the Spanish Armada. The Kinfauns Castle as a Troopship which is a National Maritime Museum piece[8].HMS Vindictive Storming Zeebrugge Mole which hangs in the Britannia Royal Naval College[9]. His work therefore often tackled emotive moments in maritime history.

Much of his work was done as book illustration or as commercial art for shipbuilders. Amongst major publishing names who used his material were Frederick Warne & Co,Thomas Nelson (publisher), Cassell (publisher), Methuen Publishing and S.P.C.K.[10].
