National Stroke Association

National Stroke Association is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization working to reduce the incidence and impact of stroke, the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. National Stroke Association delivers education and programs focused on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and support for all impacted by stroke.[1] [2]

Jim Baranski is the current chief executive officer of National Stroke Association.

History

National Stroke Association was formed in 1984 to fill a void as the only national nonprofit healthcare organization focusing 100 percent of its resources on stroke. National Stroke Association has become a leading national resource on stroke and the driving force behind efforts to improve stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in the U.S. Based in Centennial, Colo., National Stroke Association sustains itself through individual donations, memberships, sponsorships and grants.[3] In 2006, the Annals of Neurology published National Stroke Association’s guidelines for the management of transient ischemic attacks. The final recommendations concluded that a TIA patient needs urgent evaluation and treatment.[4]

Mission

National Stroke Association’s mission is to reduce the incidence and impact of stroke through education and programs focused on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and support for all impacted by stroke.[5]

Programs and Activities

Stroke survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals and anyone looking to learn more about stroke can engage with National Stroke Association through a variety of different programs, events, fundraising, volunteering and awareness observances.

Careliving

‘’’Careliving’’’SM is a program designed specifically to help support the millions of caregivers of stroke survivors. The program features a comprehensive ‘’’Careliving’’’SM ‘’’Guide’’’ and ‘’’Careliving’’’SM ‘’’Community’’’, an online social network exclusive to caregivers of stroke survivors. This program gives caregivers information and support that enables them to care better for stroke survivors and themselves, thus helping to reduce the impact of stroke on families and friends.[6] [7] ‘’’Careliving Community’’’ also connects members to expert advice from healthcare professionals, authors and other organizations that specialize in caregiving, such as Lotsa Helping Hands.[8]

‘’’Faces of Stroke’’’SM is an awareness campaign with content generated by the public. The campaign aims to show the personal side of stroke and educate the public about important stroke facts by sharing personal stories of stroke champions. The campaign launched in 2011 and hundreds continue to step forward to share their experiences and take on a vital role in the act of raising awareness.[9] In the fall of 2012, National Stroke Association began to bring special attention each month to specific health conditions closely associated with stroke, beginning with a spotlight on atrial fibrillation in September[10]. Each campaign featured the story of a special ‘’’Faces of Stroke’’’ ambassador. In November 2012, Henry Winkler partnered with National Stroke Association to highlight National Family Caregivers Month.[11]

‘’’StrokeSmart’’’™ is a free publication filled with inspirational real-life stories of people impacted by stroke. The magazine updates readers on new science and helpful products and tips for recovery and lifestyle, as well as stroke survivor and caregiver experiences. Through free subscriptions to individuals, support groups, hospitals and rehabilitation centers, each issue of the magazine reaches 270,000 people who need it across the U.S. In 2013, National Stroke Association partnered with a new publisher to give ‘’’StrokeSmart’’’ magazine a redesign and launched a new website to provide more engaging content.[29] [30]
