Being as an Ocean is an American post-hardcore band from Alpine, California, formed in 2011. They are currently signed to InVogue Records.[3] They have released one full-length album, Dear G-d.... The record charted at number 27 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers.[4][5]
The band recorded their first full-length album in San Diego, California with their guitarist Tyler Ross, with mixing and mastering duties fulfilled by Brian Hood. After a few line-up changes, the band announced that their second album How We Both Wondrously Perish will be released on May 6, 2014.
History
Formation and Dear God... (2011–2013)
Being as an Ocean was formed in 2011, a while after unblack metal band Vanguard decided to break-up after three releases (Dragon Slayers in 2006, Erek and Ivor in 2008 and Bring Hope in 2009). Vanguard was active between 2005 and 2011, and consisted of Joel Quartuccio (vocals), Tyler Ross (lead guitar), Ryan Ellis (rhythm guitar), Ralph Sica (bass) and Shad Hamawe (drums). Joel, Tyler, Ralph and Shad decided to start a band with a new musical direction influenced by bands such as Bring Me the Horizon, mewithoutYou, Oceana, As Cities Burn, Underoath, Sigur Rós, Balance and Composure and Bon Iver. The band name comes after a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty".
They begin writting for the first album right after its formation. They tracked it in an old converted hotel called the Palm sand then was sent to Brian Hood to get mixed and mastered. They released their first single, "Dear G-d", which attracted the attention of InVogue Records, which they were signed to release their debut album. Dear G-d... was released on October 23, 2012, and was met with critical acclaim. Shortly after, Jacob Prest joined the band as rhythm guitar. On 2013, after touring intensively during a year they released a free song called "The People Who Share My Name".
Line-up changes and How We Both Wondrously Perish (2013–present)
On 2013, Shad Hamawe and Jacob Prest left the band for unknow reasons and the band started audictioning for new members. Connor Denis, of the hardcore punk band Sleep Patterns, joined the band as their new drummer. With this new line-up, they began writting and recording for a new album that will be released sometime in 2014. Michael McGough, of the post-hardcore band The Elijah, was also announced as the new guitarist for the band. On February 25, they revealed the album art of their sophomore album, How We Both Wondrously Perish, and announced that it will be released on May 6, 2014.
