Selma Mutal

Selma Mutal is a Dutch film score composer.

Early history

Born in Lima, Peru to Dutch parents, Selma Mutal studied composition at the National Conservatory of Amsterdam and Film Scoring at the École Normale de Musique in Paris, France. She also studied piano improvisation with improviser Misha Mengelberg. Mutal began her career composing for contemporary dance, theatre and television. In 2003, Mutual began working in film. Some of her credits include director Claudia Llosa's film The Milk of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada), which won the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin Festival and which was nominated for the 2010 Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2010, Mutal composed the soundtrack for Undertow (Contracorriente), which was directed by Javier Fuentes-León. Undertow received various awards including the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival 2010 and won Best Film at the 2011 Sundance Festival and Best Original Soundtrack at the International Film Festival of Annonay, (France). Mutual is collaborating with Fuentes-León on a second feature film, The Vanished Elephant (El Elefante Desaparecido) to be released October 2014.

In 2012, Mutal composed the music for Burden of Silence, which was directed by Tod Lending.

In 2013 the International Film Festival of Aubagne (France), commissioned her to direct the Master Class on Film Composition, that culminated in a live performance during the festival's closing ceremony. Selma Mutal lives and works in Paris.

Mutual is also working on the score for Cocaine Prison, which will be directed by Violeta Ayala.
