The Lim-Sandžak Chetnik Detachment[1] was a military unit of Chetniks established in the northern Montenegro and Sandžak in the end of June 1942[2] during the Second World War.

Establishment and initial structure

The Lim-Sandžak Chetnik Detachment was established by Pavle Đurišić, based on the agreement beteween Đorđe Lašić and Italian General Alessandro Pirzio Biroli which was signed on 24 July 1942 after about 2 months of negotiations. This detachment had a status of Chetniks who had legal status with occupying forces. Illegal Chetniks were much more numerous and important. Italians tolerated illegal Chetniks and gave them status of "national peasants' militia". The Lim-Sandžak Chetnik Detachment was mobile military unit of four battalions, one for each region. The first for the region of Bijelo Polje, the second for Berane, the third for Andrijevica and fourth for Kolašin. According to the agreement the detachment had 1,500 men who received a salary, food, clothes and arms from Italians.[3]

Expansion

On 12 July 1942 the Chetnik headquarter met in Zimonjića Kula to decide about the organization of Chetnik commands. They divided Montenegro to western and eastern sector. Bajo Stanišić was appointed as commander for the western sector while Pavle Đurišić was appointed as commander for eastern sector that corresponded with the territory within responsibility of the Lim-Sandžak Chetnik Detachment.[4] At conference held in August 1942 the region under Đurišić command was expanded with Prijepolje, Priboj, Nova Varoš and Sjenica.[5]

Battles

This detachment participated in the Operation Trio.[6][7][verification needed]

In the middle of May 1943, during the initial phase of Case Black, around 2,000 men from this detachment, including their commander Pavle Đurišić, were captured by German forces.[8][verification needed] Vojislav Lukačević succeeded Đurišić on the position of the commander of the remaining forces from this detachment.[9]
