Williams Murray Hamm is a strategic design branding agency founded in 1997[1] WMH’s activities include strategy, brand design and brand communications.

The studio of 20 people is based in Clerkenwell, London from which the company works globally.

History

WMH was created "out of a frustration and boredom with the world of brand design" [2]

The early years were notable for WMH’s work in FMCG packaging such that the business was named Design Agency of the Year 2002 by Marketing Magazine[3]

– 2001's "Wild Brew" redesign, for Interbrew, was the first design ever to win both a DBA Design Effectiveness Award and a Silver at D&AD." [4]

– Big Food" for Hovis[5], in the same year, added £86M to the owner RHM’s profits, making it the fastest growing grocery brand in the UK and winning WMH its first DBA Design Effectiveness Grand Prix.[6]

– McVitie's Jaffa Cakes[7], GSK's Horlicks[8] and Sainsbury's SO organics [9]and Basics[10] enjoyed considerable growth in sales and added to WMH's creative and design effectiveness awards.[11] The business also worked for smaller companies where it could hone its skills - WMH's Clipper Teas redesign won the company its second DBA Design Effectiveness Grand Prix Award in 2004[12].[13]

WMH’s first foray outside FMCG packaging was its appointment by Barclays Bank to redesign their corporate identity. [14]Banks had become more familiar with their customers; Abbey National had been described as ‘looking more like a dress shop than a bank’. [15]Barclays defined itself as ‘fluent in finance’ which WMH interpreted with strong, flat graphics reminiscent of the classic Barclays fascia that had adorned every high street for many years.

The move away from packaging as the sole discipline continued with the redesign of the identity for London's iconic Fortnum& Mason[16] Jamie Oliver's Recipease [17] and in financial services, a new positioning and identity for Beazley the insurance underwriters [18]

In 2006 WMH was acquired by Loewy Group, a business that was subsequently acquired by Writtle Holdings in 2011.[19]

Founding partner Richard Murray died in 2010 [20]and planning director, now managing director, Guy Lambert, joined in 2012.

These events forced a complete reappraisal in WMH about what the company does. The marketing landscape had changed and WMH is now an integrated agency with a standalone strategic offer, complemented by design and brand communications. It brings these three skills together under ‘Designvertising’, a specialism for clients who need to focus a brand’s touch points around a single creative idea.[21]

Designvertising is exemplified by WMH’s work for Langholm Capital’s Juiceburst. In 2013, Juiceburst’s Blippar campaign proved more popular than those of Dr Who and One Direction.[22]

WMH led Castrol motor oils global relaunch from packaging to TV idents and helped build its online presence.[23]

The business works with some of the world’s largest companies – Tesco, ConAgra Foods and Syngenta are current clients. At the same time it has continued to work with smaller ventures like Chosen Bun, the UK’s first hamburger delivery company [24]and Brummells the online fine fragrance and skincare site

Publications

WMH updated The Little Book of Don'ts in Brand Design in 2004 The three partners delivered Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, a celebration of the company's ten years in business in 2009 Richard Murray wrote 'Churnmore' A True Taste of Brand Management in 2007
