Cheapism.com is a review and comparison website that specializes in recommending the best inexpensive consumer goods and services.[2] The recommendations are based on price, product features and online reviews. Unlike some of its competitors, such as Consumer Reports, the site rarely does hands-on testing of products.[3]. In addition to recommending specific products and services, Cheapism’s buying guides include reviews of the top picks and give detailed information about the product category, such as which features are worth paying for.[4]
History
Max Levitte co-founded Cheapism in 2009 after unsuccessfully searching for a resource to help him purchase an inexpensive but decent vacuum cleaner.[5] He teamed up with Felix Sheng, Maralyn Edid and several writers to create such a resource. Since then the site has grown to review 200-plus categories of products and services. It has also started comparing policies and surcharges that affect consumers, such as price matching and airline fees as well as big box and warehouse stores.[6]
In 2011, Cheapism began recommending local inexpensive restaurants to users checking in via Foursquare.[7] That effort has since been discontinued.
