The Battle for the Real GSU is a college football rivalry between the Georgia Southern University Eagles and the Georgia State University Panthers.[1] Both schools are members of the Sun Belt Conference. While the teams have only met once in football (due to Georgia State beginning their program only recently),[2] the rivalry began in the 1980s.[3]

The game derives its name from the common initialism for Georgia Southern University and Georgia State University. The two university's similarities end with the name. Georgia State University is an University System of Georgia research institution located in the heart of downtown Atlanta. The location has its drawbacks. Its campus is scattered throughout the downtown area, requiring students to schedule classes around Atlanta's bus schedules.[4] To contrast, Georgia Southern is a University System of Georgia regional institution located in rural Statesboro, Georgia. The college campus's location allows Georgia Southern to offer the so-called traditional college experience.[5] Georgia Southern fans also point out the prestige of their football program,[6] while Georgia State fans point out the prestige of their basketball program.[7] Despite these differences, sports commentators continually confused the two schools.[6]
