Carousell (Singapore)

Carousell is a mobile C2C marketplace and a mobile app that aims to make online person-to-person buying and selling accessible and simple for the emerging smartphone generation worldwide. [1]

Users of Carousell must register and create account before using it. With an account, the user will be able to buy or sell items which he/ she wants.[2]

As of November 2013, Carousell has successfully raised $1 million seed funding led by Rakuten, with follow-on investments by Golden Gate ventures, 500StartUps, and a few other investors like Danny Oei Wirianto and Darius Cheung.[3] Subsequently in November 2014, Carousell announced that it received a US$6 million in investment from Sequoia India. [4]

History

Carousell was founded by Quek Siu Rui, Lucas Ngoo, and Marcus Tan, and launched in 2012. [5] Carousell was part of an idea in the National University of Singapore(NUS) Startup Weekend competition,an intensive 54-hour crash course in entrepreneurship that brought together teams to develop business ideas, which saw it beat more than 40 other ideas to clinch the top prize.Originally, the idea for a digital flea market, now known as Carousell, was thought by Quek Siu Rui while he was on exchange at Stanford University under the NUS Overseas Scholar Programme. [6]

After Quek finished his exams, work on Carousell started immediately together with his two co-founders, Lucas and Marcus. They were aided by a $7,000 ideation grant from NUS Enterprise.[7]
