The Director of Military Intelligence (D J2) serves as the commander of the Directorate of Military Intelligence, the intelligence branch of the Irish Defence Forces and the main foreign and domestic intelligence gathering service of Ireland. The Director of Military Intelligence is responsible for the provision of timely and accurate defence and security assessments to the Minister for Defence in respect of national security, and the safety and security of the Defence Forces personnel deployed overseas on peace support operations. Monthly intelligence summaries, threat assessments and briefings are provided in person to the Minister for Defence. The Director of Intelligence is an officer from the Irish Army of Colonel rank.[2][3]
The current Defence Forces Director of Military Intelligence is Colonel Joe Mulligan of the Irish Army.[1]
