The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is a global membership organization consisting of privacy and information security professionals. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the IAPP has more than 20,000 members in 83 countries.[1] In addition to hosting annual events and publishing privacy and data protection e-newsletters, the IAPP sponsors the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certification.
CIPP is the global standard for professionals who manage, handle and access data. When you achieve a CIPP credential, you show that you understand the foundational knowledge of the laws, regulations and standards of privacy in a particular jurisdiction or discipline.[2]
Components of the certification program include:
- Jurisdictional laws, regulations and enforcement models, or rules and standards in your domain
- Essential privacy concepts and principles
- Legal requirements for handling and transferring data
Offered exclusively by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the CIPP is the only information privacy certification recognized and respected by employers the world over.
History
Initiated in 2000, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) was originally constituted as the Privacy Officers Association (POA). In 2002 it became the International Association of Privacy Officers (IAPO) when the POA merged with a competing group, the Association of Corporate Privacy Officers (ACPO). The group was renamed to the International Association of Privacy Professionals in 2003 to reflect a broadened mission to include the ranks of corporate personnel, beyond the position of Chief Privacy Officer, engaged in privacy-related tasks.
